YEOVIL LIONS HAND OVER 50 YEARS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE.
Fred Monson, President of Yeovil Lions handed over the chain of office to the new President Jane Staffiere of the Yeovil Lions Branch Club at Lanes Hotel West Coker last week. This marked the merger of the two clubs into one with the newer members of the branch club taking over the mantle of 50 years of community service. The original Yeovil club was set up in 1965 by a group of local business men and tradesmen two of whom, still remain active members of the club today.
The handover ceremony was attended by over 50 members of the service organization, including the District Governor Alan Good, long service awards were presented and the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship award was presented to Neville Sanders and John Morley as recognition of their commitment of 50 years of service to the club and to the local community.
In 2004 the Western Gazette ran an article as part of a recruitment drive for new members to form a Branch Club to ensure the future of Lions in Yeovil. Now ten years on, the Branch Club has a thriving membership and is ready to take on the administration and title of The Lions Club of Yeovil. Members of the original men’s club will continue to meet regularly on a social basis, giving support to the main club where possible, but happy that their years of long service and presence in Yeovil will live on in the town.
Current 2014 Lions president Jane Staffiere said ‘It is an honor to take on the chain of office following the hard work and commitment of these members over the course of fifty years’.
